Love stories come in many forms, and some have the power to surprise us. During the Harlem Renaissance, an unmarried woman ‘of a certain age’ was known as an Old Settler. Elizabeth and Quilly, sisters in their fifties, take in a young male boarder named Husband Witherspoon to help with the rent. When Elizabeth and Husband take to liking each other, the tension in the household exposes a thirty-year-old rift between the two sisters.

Overflowing with humanity, warmth, and laughter, The Old Settler presents a richly textured family tapestry woven from humor shared through the years, the poignancy of dashed hopes, and the moving story of one woman’s last chance at love.
